There's only one day a year when lying is socially acceptable: April Fools' Day.

What lie did you tell this year?

If the lie is too outlandish, people spot the joke instantly. If it's too subtle, people actually believe it, which causes its own headaches. So personally, I've never told an April Fools' lie — and I suspect a lot of people feel the same way.

That might also be the influence of my mother, who has always kindly believed whatever I told her.
